About Basenjis Basenjis are also know as the Congo Dog. Basenji is the African word for "bush thing". It is an ancient breed, often seen depicted on stone tablets in Egyptian tombs. The Basenji has a shoulder height of 15-17 inches and weighs 20-26 lbs. It has a wrinkled forehead, almond shaped eyes, and small, pointed, erect ears. Basenjis have short backs, tiny feet, and tightly curled, white tipped tails. They have long necks which are similar in appearance to a deer’s. Their coat is fine, dense, and short-haired. They shed very little and are excellent for people with allergy problems The Basenji makes several interesting, unique noises, including an unusual yodel-like bark, and can imitate the bark of other dogs. The Basenji cleans itself with its paws like a cat, so bathing is generally unnecessary. Basenjis are highly intelligent and learn quickly. They can be somewhat independent, sometimes making training challeging. |
